Annie, I really enjoyed this perspective. My kids are public school grads, with 1 public and 2 private university current students who are thriving in their own ways. It is unfortunate race to find “the right college “ was so stressful for kids and parents alike.
The only advantage of the Chicago high school admissions process is that college applications were a piece of cake. My kid went to a Catholic high school in the suburbs, and he said that all the city kids were relaxed but all the suburban kids were stressed about college.
The older I get, the more I'm grateful that I, and then my kids, grew up in the rural midwest. All of that craziness simply wasn't available to us, which makes opting out so much easier!
Totally agree with you on school elitism. Plus I would be interested in your take on the value of entering the work place with a chip on your shoulder.
From the title I was expecting your take on the NYT 100 best books of the 21st Century and why Demon Copperhead is there but Shuggie Bain is not. Similar themes but different cultural references. Shuggie Bain is the better book by a long shot (if you were not born in the US).
