Great post, Annie! As a librarian, I took this approach with a bunch of random artifacts that were unearthed when cleaning out my dad's folks' house. WorldCat (an online catalog that consolidates several thousands of library collections) is an excellent resource for finding institutions with specific holdings and figuring out where to donate items. Contributing to collective knowledge and historical preservation is so much better than adding to landfills!
Good to know--we have some family things that have been languishing, because we don't want to just toss, but can't really use, either.
